Introduction

What is Family and Friends 6?

Family and Friends 6 is the sixth level of a seven-level course that follows the British English curriculum. It is designed for primary school students who have already learned some basic English. It covers topics such as hobbies, animals, festivals, inventions, mysteries, legends, and more. It also introduces more complex grammar structures such as modal verbs, passive voice, reported speech, conditionals, and relative clauses.

Family and Friends 6 consists of several components that work together to provide a rich and varied learning experience for students. These include:

  • The Class Book, which contains 15 units of colorful and engaging activities that present and practice the main language points.

  • The Workbook, which provides additional exercises to reinforce what students have learned in the Class Book.

  • The Teacher's Book, which offers detailed lesson plans, background information, tips, suggestions, answers, and extra activities.

  • The Multi-ROM Pack, which contains interactive games, songs, stories, videos, phonics activities, and tests that can be used on a computer or on an interactive whiteboard.

  • The Testing and Evaluation Book, which provides various tools to assess students' progress throughout the course.

What is the Testing and Evaluation Book?

The Testing and Evaluation Book is a supplementary resource that helps teachers measure how well their students have mastered the language objectives of Family and Friends 6. It contains three types of assessment: classroom evaluation, pupil's self-assessment, and formal testing.

Benefits of using the Testing and Evaluation Book

Classroom evaluation

Classroom evaluation is key to assessing students' progress. This can be achieved in a number of ways.

Monitoring

When students are engaged in productive activities such as speaking or writing, teachers can walk around the classroom and check their progress, and offer help where appropriate. Teachers can also observe how individual students respond to different exercises and tasks.

Regular reviews in the Class Book and Workbook

The purpose of the double-page Review section in the Class Book and Workbook is to revise the main learning points of the units, giving teachers an opportunity to evaluate how much students have understood. Teachers can use these steps to conduct the review:

  • Start the lesson by revising the Language of the units. Teachers may wish to make notes on which students are still having difficulty in recognizing or producing words. These notes can be recorded later on the teacher's evaluation sheet.

  • Go through the Class Book review activities. Give students time to check their answers. Observe how individual students respond to the exercise.

  • Go through the answers with the whole class as a group.

Teacher's evaluation sheet

A teacher's evaluation sheet is provided on page 5 of the Testing and Evaluation Book. This is to help teachers keep ongoing records of students' progress in skills, vocabulary, and social development. Teachers can use this sheet to rate each student on a scale of 1 to 5 for each skill or area, and write comments or suggestions for improvement.

Pupil's self-assessment

Pupil's self-assessment is a way of encouraging students to reflect on their own learning and set goals for themselves. This can be done in two ways.

Self-assessment checklist

A self-assessment checklist is provided on page 6 of the Testing and Evaluation Book. This is a list of statements that describe what students should be able to do by the end of Family and Friends 6. Students can use this checklist to rate themselves on a scale of 1 to 5 for each statement, and write comments or questions for their teacher.

Self-assessment test

A self-assessment test is provided on page 7 of the Testing and Evaluation Book. This is a short test that covers the main language points of Family and Friends 6. Students can use this test to check their own knowledge and identify areas that need more practice. They can also compare their answers with the answer key on page 8.

Formal testing

Formal testing is a way of measuring students' achievement and progress at specific points in the course. The Testing and Evaluation Book provides three types of formal tests: unit tests, summative tests, and skills tests.

Unit tests

Unit tests are provided for each unit of Family and Friends 6. They are designed to test students' understanding of the language objectives of each unit. They include listening, reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary sections. The unit tests are accompanied by answer keys and audio scripts.

Summative tests

Summative tests are provided for every three units of Family and Friends 6. They are designed to test students' overall achievement and progress in the course. They include listening, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and speaking sections. The summative tests are accompanied by answer keys, audio scripts, and speaking assessment criteria.

Skills tests

Skills tests are provided for every four units of Family and Friends 6. They are designed to test students' ability to use the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in an integrated way. They include listening and speaking sections based on a topic or theme, and reading and writing sections based on a text type or genre. The skills tests are accompanied by answer keys, audio scripts, and speaking assessment criteria.
